Meteora Monasteries Opening Hours

Meteora monasteries opening hours and closed days, winter and summer, which open on each day, phone numbers, the €5 entry and the dress code (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

The six Meteora monasteries are open from about 9 or 10 am to between 2 and 5 pm, and each closes on one to three days a week; on the winter timetable, from 1 November, all six are open on Saturdays and Sundays and only three on Thursdays. Entry is €5 a person at each monastery, in cash. The day trips plan their visits around the closed days: Meteora Trip’s day from Athens, with time inside three monasteries, is from $88 a person (checked October 2026).

From Visit Greece, the Greek National Tourism Organisation, and the Holy Metropolis of Stagoi and Meteora, the church authority for the monasteries, both read in October 2026 (winter 1 November to 30 April). The two official sources agree except at St Nicholas Anapafsas, where Visit Greece gives 09:00 to 16:00 every day but Friday and the Holy Metropolis gives 09:30 to 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. The monasteries set their own hours and can change them for feast days.

Worked out from the closed days above.

On a day trip from Athens you reach Meteora around 1 pm, so on winter afternoons the Great Meteoron (to 14:00) and Roussanou (to 14:00) are the hardest to fit in; that is why some day trips go inside two monasteries rather than three from November to March.

Entry, dress code and access

  • Entry: €5 a person at each monastery, paid in cash at the door, as the operators list it in October 2026 (two private-car operators list €3); the toilets at Varlaam cost €1.
  • Dress code: shoulders covered, long trousers for men and long skirts for women, and most monasteries lend long skirts and scarves at the entrance (Visit Greece). The Holy Metropolis of Stagoi and Meteora states that men in shorts or sleeveless tops and women in trousers or sleeveless tops are not let in.
