Meteora Day Trip from Athens by Train

Meteora by train from Athens: the 06:58 to Palaiofarsalos, a bus to Kalambaka by 12:30, back in Athens at 21:58, and the train tours from $117 (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

You can do Meteora from Athens by train in a day, but not all the way by rail: Hellenic Train’s 06:58 from Athens reaches Palaiofarsalos at 10:01, and Hellenic Train’s replacement bus takes two hours more to Kalambaka, arriving at 12:30. The bus back leaves at 16:50 and you are in Athens at 21:58, about five hours later. The train tours add a minibus and a tour leader at Meteora for the four hours in between. Meteora Rocks’ train day trip is from $117 a person with the tickets, rated 4.8 from 492 reviews (checked October 2026).

What guests say

Of the newest 350 reviews of Meteora Rocks’ train day trip, read on 29 October 2026, 300 give five stars. The low marks are about the travel half of the day: guests left to find their own way at the station, or who expected the tickets as paper rather than an e-mail with QR codes, and one in 2022 who summed it up as four hours there, four at Meteora and four back. Keep the e-mail with the train and bus tickets on your phone, and be at Larissis station early.

Train or coach?

A coach day trip costs less and keeps you on one coach from Athens and back; the train trip costs more and leaves you to make the connection, but it is a change of scene. The train is slower while the last leg is a bus: about five and a half hours out and five back, against about four each way by coach. Meteora by bus from Athens covers the coach trips.
