What the day is like on the coach
Of the newest 350 reviews of Meteora Thrones’ 9 am trip, written from mid-September to 29 October 2026, 241 give five stars; the guides at Meteora and the place itself get the praise. The low marks are about the coach half: eight hours of road, a crowded departure at Larissis station where guests had to find their coach among several, a short lunch, and roadside stops with poor toilets. Get to the station 15 minutes early with your voucher open, and take water and a snack.

Going by public bus
KTEL Trikala, the regional bus company, runs a direct bus from Athens to Kalambaka Monday to Saturday at 06:30, from the stop at Kato Patisia metro station, and back from Kalambaka Monday to Saturday at 17:45. A single is €36.30 and a return €63.20 (KTEL Trikala, October 2026). There is no guide, and getting from Kalambaka up to the monasteries and back is yours to arrange.
For a day trip, a coach tour is the better buy: from $80 a person (checked October 2026), not far above the return fare, it adds the drive between the monasteries and a local guide at Meteora. The public bus suits a stay of a night or more in Kalambaka.
Driving yourself, or a private car
By car it is about four hours each way on the motorway north and the road across the plain from Lamia to Trikala. A private car with a driver from Athens or Piraeus, Gray Line's private trip, is $736 for up to four, about 12 hours (checked October 2026). With your own car, a night in Kalambaka or Kastraki lets you see the monasteries at opening time and the sunset.
