How the day runs
The coaches leave from Larissis station, Athens’ main railway station, between 8 and 9 am, stop once each way at a roadside restaurant and reach Kalambaka about four hours later. In Meteora a local guide takes the group to the viewpoints over all six monasteries, to the hermit caves of Badovas, seen from outside, and inside two or three monasteries. Lunch in Kalambaka or Kastraki is an option on most tours. The coach is back in Athens around 10 to 11 pm.

By coach or by train
Most day trips go by coach, about four hours each way. The train tours put you on Hellenic Train’s 06:58 from Athens to Palaiofarsalos, about three hours, then on Hellenic Train’s replacement bus for the last two hours to Kalambaka, arriving at 12:30; the way back leaves Kalambaka at 16:50 and reaches Athens at 21:58 (Hellenic Train’s timetable). The train day is longer on the road than the coach. Meteora by train from Athens and Meteora by bus from Athens go through each.
Which monasteries open on your day
The six active monasteries each close one or more days a week, and from 1 November they keep shorter winter hours. On the winter timetable all six are open on Saturday and Sunday, five on Monday and Tuesday, four on Wednesday and Friday, and three on Thursday, when the Great Meteoron, Varlaam and the Holy Trinity are closed. The tours plan their visits around this. Meteora monasteries opening hours has the day-by-day table.
What to wear and pay
The monasteries ask for covered shoulders, long trousers for men and long skirts for women; most lend skirts and scarves at the entrance (Visit Greece). The Holy Metropolis of Stagoi and Meteora, the church authority for the monasteries, states that men in shorts or sleeveless tops and women in trousers or sleeveless tops are not let in. Entry is €5 a person at each monastery, in cash, as the operators list it in October 2026. Every monastery is up a staircase or a slope except St Stephen’s, the easiest to reach (Visit Greece).
A sunset, or a night
From November to March the sun sets early enough for the day trips to catch it from a viewpoint before the drive back. In summer, a sunset needs a night in Kalambaka: Meteora sunset tours compares the local sunset tours, and is Meteora worth visiting from Athens? weighs a day against two. If you are choosing between this and Delphi, Meteora or Delphi sets them side by side.

Meteora Day Trip FAQ
The questions people ask before going to Meteora from Athens, answered in the first sentence and explained in the ones after.
About four hours each way by coach, with a rest stop; we measured the main roads from Athens to Kalambaka at 332 km. The day trips leave Larissis station at 8 or 9 am and are back after about 14 hours, with four to five hours at Meteora. Meteora by bus from Athens compares the coach trips.
Partly: Hellenic Train's 06:58 from Athens reaches Palaiofarsalos in about three hours, and Hellenic Train's replacement bus takes about two hours more to Kalambaka, arriving at 12:30. The bus back leaves Kalambaka at 16:50 and the train reaches Athens at 21:58, by Hellenic Train's timetable read in October 2026; the train tours include the tickets and a minibus tour at Meteora. Meteora by train from Athens explains the journey.
Each of the six opens from about 9 or 10 am to between 2 and 5 pm and closes one to three days a week; on the winter timetable, from 1 November, all six open on Saturdays and Sundays and only three on Thursdays. The hours are from Visit Greece, read in October 2026; the monasteries can change them for feast days. Meteora monasteries opening hours has the table.

Covered shoulders, long trousers for men and a long skirt for women. That is Visit Greece's description of the dress code, and most monasteries lend long skirts and scarves at the entrance. Delphi for ancient Greece and a shorter day, 160 km away by road; Meteora for the monasteries on the rocks, 332 km away; or both on a two-day tour. Meteora or Delphi sets them side by side.
